Fields of application

The PELICAN eddy current separator is designed to recover aluminium, copper and brass automatically from dry bulk waste streams. It is intended for sorting plants, recycling operators and local authorities that want to recover value from their material streams with reliable, safe and economical equipment.
Unlike standard eddy current separators, the PELICAN has a thermal camera that continuously monitors the pole rotor area and automatically shuts down the installation if the temperature rises abnormally. The PELICAN efficiently separates aluminium (cans, profiles, foils), copper and brass from inert fractions (plastic, glass, wood, paper) in dry recycling streams.
Typical applications
- Municipal solid waste and industrial waste sorting plants
- Processing of incinerator bottom ash (IBA)
- Recycling of electronic waste (WEEE)
- Recovery of aluminium from mixed plastics
- Recovery of automotive shredder residue (ASR)
- Purification of output streams
Operating principles
The PELICAN is based on the physical principle of eddy currents. A high-speed magnetic rotor made of permanent magnets turns at 5,000 rpm at the end of the conveyor belt and generates a strong alternating magnetic field. When aluminium, copper or brass pieces pass through this field, eddy currents are induced in them. These currents in turn generate a magnetic field that opposes the rotor’s field. The resulting repulsive force ejects the non-ferrous metals along a trajectory separate from the inert materials. Plastics, glass and wood follow their natural trajectory and are collected separately.
Thermal monitoring: unique built-in safety
The PELICAN is fitted as standard with a thermal camera that continuously monitors the pole rotor area. If the temperature rises abnormally or the start of a fire is detected, the installation shuts down automatically. This active safety feature protects both the operator and the installation.
Operating recommendations
- Feed the PELICAN in a thin, uniform layer across the full belt width. A vibratory feeder (available as an option) ensures this distribution and significantly improves the purity of the recovered aluminium, copper and brass fractions.
- Position the PELICAN after an overband magnet or a magnetic drum so that ferrous metals are removed first. Processing a stream from which the ferrous metals have already been removed improves the purity of the recovered non-ferrous metals, reduces belt wear and extends rotor service life.
- Carry out preventive maintenance: service the rotor and drive system periodically to maintain their performance.
- The self-supporting frame allows quick belt replacement without structural disassembly, minimising downtime.
- Do not exceed the rated throughput for the product passage width. Overloading reduces aluminium and copper separation quality and increases belt wear.
General characteristics
The PELICAN is an eddy current separator available in four product passage widths from 650 to 1,200 mm, covering the processing capacities of medium-sized to large sorting plants.
The high-performance pole rotor running at 5,000 rpm ensures optimum ejection force on non-ferrous metals. The 400 mm high side walls keep the product on the belt and improve operator safety. The troughed bed seals the belt and guides the PVC conveyor belt precisely. The self-supporting frame makes it easy to remove and replace the belt quickly, reducing downtime.
The equipment is supplied with CE marking in accordance with the Machinery Directive. The Lenoir-Mec after-sales service network provides fast on-site support and keeps a dedicated stock of spare parts to minimise downtime on your sorting line.

Frequently asked questions
Which metals can the PELICAN separator recover?
The PELICAN automatically recovers aluminium (cans, profiles, foils), copper and brass from dry bulk waste streams. These metals are separated from inert fractions such as plastic, glass, wood and paper.
What is the PELICAN’s special safety feature?
It is fitted as standard with a thermal camera that continuously monitors the pole rotor area. If the temperature rises abnormally or the start of a fire is detected, the installation shuts down automatically.
What are the dimensions and technical specifications of the PELICAN?
It is available in four product passage widths, from 650 to 1,200 mm. It has a pole rotor running at 5,000 rpm, 400 mm high side walls, a PVC conveyor belt and a self-supporting frame. It is supplied with CE marking in accordance with the Machinery Directive.
What options are available for the PELICAN?
It can be supplemented with an AED-RX power supply and control cabinet, a vibratory feeder with frame, a touchscreen supervision panel, a polyurethane (PU) belt and a custom RAL colour. It is available in a concentric or eccentric version for improved ejection.
How should the PELICAN be operated and maintained for good results?
Feed it in a thin, uniform layer across the full belt width. Place it after an overband magnet or a magnetic drum so that ferrous metals are removed first, and do not exceed the rated throughput. Periodic preventive maintenance is recommended. The self-supporting frame allows the belt to be replaced quickly without structural disassembly.
